April 2024 Recap

Augmentation vs Automation of Workflows

Hey Devs,

Let’s talk about AI replacing developers. There’s been a lot of buzz around Devin AI solving issues and bugs autonomously, but in reality, this is another case of augmentation, not automation. The Founder of Cognition Labs even stated “Our vision is for Devin to be the assistant that makes every software engineer 10x more productive.”

As discussed on the AI in Business podcast last week, our CEO backed the idea that the focus should be on how developers evolve with AI, not against it.

“If you become good at utilizing these tools and identifying when they’re best to be utilized, you’re going to move faster. That’s how you upgrade into that 10x. You know what problems to solve yourself and what problems to outsource to these generative AI models.”

- Tsavo Knott, Technical Co-Founder and CEO of Pieces

Stay tuned for our in-depth whitepaper coming out next month, where we’ll discuss why AI won’t replace programmers.

  1. Coding in Context: The Pieces Podcast: Yes, you read that right. We’re launching a podcast across all streaming platforms to discuss the latest tech trends, tools, and tips. Sign up on our Events page to be notified of upcoming episodes and more!

  1. Customize Your Toolbar: We understand that customization significantly enhances user experience. In the Pieces Desktop App settings, you can now configure the saved materials action bar to appear as default, suggested, or custom. Choosing 'custom' opens a new settings menu where you can configure a custom toolbar, allowing you to select up to 5 options to display in your list and gallery view action toolbar.

  1. Pieces CLI Agent: Leverage the power of Pieces right in your terminal with our new open source CLI agent. Manage, save, create, and edit code snippets, interact with an LLM, and access all Pieces OS features without navigating a GUI.

  1. SDK Documentation: We've dedicated a significant amount of time in April to updating our technical SDK documentation and technical glossary. These are now available in the new Build section of our documentation, specifically designed for developers to get a fast start with open source projects built on top of our Pieces OS technology.

  1. Twitter Spaces: Our weekly Twitter Spaces have been gaining a lot of traction! This week, we discussed how AI is impacting developer productivity. Follow us on Twitter to catch the next one!

  2. Power Menu: We continuously strive to enhance your experience with the Pieces for Developers desktop application. The new Power Menu allows you to efficiently perform your favorite tasks in the Pieces for Developers Desktop App. Simply search for a task in the search bar and execute it directly from the Pieces Power Menu.
